Love Rimurimu is a seaweed restoration and regeneration project. They focus on helping to regrow, and plant out kelp babies in Wellington harbour..

Karengo!!
A favourite to dry out and sprinkle on pretty much everything.
A few important things to remember if you're harvesting this seaweed in particular- pinch off just above the tiny holdfast so it can regrow. Only harvest a few per rock so it can regenerate. Always be mindful of this, whatever you're foraging or hunting!
Rinse it.... Karengo in particular is notorious for hiding bits of sand/tiny stones.
Its similar looking to sea lettuce which is bright green, and classed as a Green Seaweed.... However Karengo has a brown colour (It does go bright green if you cook it though!)... And is classed as a Red Seaweed!

Spread on tray and dry in oven or in a dehydrator.
Then wazz it up with toasted sesame seeds.... Keeps in a jar for aaages. Make sure it's all really dry though.
Also great just on its own.

Great source of micro nutrients, iodine in particular.

These guys are like seaweed punks. Mohawks n all.. I've had a long standing game of hide n seek with one on particular. They're pretty territorial.

Best kept whole in the fridge for 48hrs in chux cloth to dry out a bit. (imo)... Gutted. Then fillet.

I personally like it crumbed. W Chipotle mayo. It's not my fav fish, quite light and flakey, eats seaweed. That's a controversial thing to say, many think it's the best fish ever! I'm not complaining, but I personally like a meatier fish.

Kept a fillet for me, and the other 3 for the fam....

I love being able to share the bounty.... (As small as it is!)

And the board! Omg it's amazing 🤩 made of fishing nets by @legaseanz ... It's the shizzle!
And my new @victoryknives fillet knife... Makes all the difference!

In a Thai red curry sauce!

Dumplings- warehou bits (scraped from frame at filleting), ginger, lemongrass, fresh chilli, grated homegrown courgette, homegrown chives, kafir lime leaves.

Got up crack of dawn and went out to Kapiti island for a scout.

The weather was perfect, not too hot, zero wind, flat as.... It can get pretty hectic out there so we got it good! Not often like this!

Strong currents in spots as always, worked the legs, and the lungs!

Had a very close encounter with a big bronzie, and followed it up with a bluebottle sting to the face 🥴, but all part of the fun 😆🦈

We came away with a good mixed bag- Warehou, Kahawai (nice big ones -great fun to spear, really strong fish!), butterfish, a big blue cod, nearly a kingy or 2 (not quite).... And kinas the size of a babies head.

2 pods of dolphins and the end of a cracker day!

Spent the day in our suits, using Octacle, no issues with itching, spots, etc.... came off easy as too, nearly 12 hours!

Boom!

Got out early this morning to check and monitor the Kelp Babies.
This is a restoration and regeneration project by @loverimurimu (not the seaweed I use in Octacle)

Giant kelp is in decline due to many reasons, climate and human related. Wellington harbour is very lucky to still have some kelp forests left, it's as far north as they'll grow due to water temps mostly.
We must protect them and work on ways to restore these beautiful underwater forests....

The wakame was rampant unfortunately, but on the massive plus side, these kelp babies have taken, and are growing well!!!

Well the viz was $hi+ so no diving (expected, but always go prepared !) ....we took the wee beasty truck for a play instead....
Handled like a dream.
Only stuck once in the sand, but managed to back up and re route up a rocky creek instead...
Back on....
Such a great bunch of people out, all having an awesome time....

Had huge problems with my skin after diving. Was going down the road of full barrier creams or giving up all together. I actually became quite unwell.
